In her own quintet, Kika seamlessly blends Anna Serierse’s wordless, pure vocal voice with her own saxophone sound. William Barrett (bass), Willem Romers (drums), and Koen Schalkwijk (piano and Wurlitzer) form the dynamically rich and agile rhythm section. Distinct musical personalities who thrive on abrasive interplay and unexpected decisions, yet can also harmoniously embrace vocals and saxophone.

The quintet is a band of five leaders, characterized by boldness in their playing. They challenge one another and take adventurous musical turns to bring out the best in each other. They color Kika’s narrative compositions, which, according to her, should above all illustrate a beautiful story. The ensemble is influenced by artists such as Kenny Wheeler & Norma Winstone, Jakob Bro, and orchestral albums like Brad Mehldau’s Highway Rider.
