National Youth Jazz Orchestra
From 2015 to 2017, I was the lead alto in the Dutch National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NJJO) under Martin Fondse. In 2015, the orchestra played venues that included the Bimhuis in Amsterdam, LantarenVenster in Rotterdam and the Amersfoort Jazz Festival, and played with the string section of the Metropole Orchestra. In the Young Metropole project, the NJJO teamed up with the classical Dutch Youth Orchestra (NJO) under Martin Fondse and Steffen Schorn. I collaborated on the live album A Rosa which resulted from that project. A year later, the NJJO played at the North Sea Jazz festival and the orchestra once again worked with the NJO, on this occasion with Metropole Orchestra conductor Jules Buckley. The Young Metropole played at the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival festival and at the historical Radio Kootwijk venue. On 19 September 2016, the NJJO won the Silver Nutcracker, an award that recognises and encourages emerging talent. The award led to television exposure on the prime-time talk show De Wereld Draait Door. In 2016 and 2017, the NJJO toured Germany and the United Kingdom with the project “Three Nations Under One Groove” in collaboration with the BuJazzo (led by Jiggs Wigham) and the NYJO (led by Mark Armstrong).
